The approved Airport Master Plan calls for the vacation of Orchard Road (green). This will occur as a result of the airport shifting to the east 550 ft. While safe for planes, it could result in bicyclist on the less safe Tucker Road (yellow).

HR Airport Master Plan & connectivity

[May 21st, 2009]

The Hood River Airport Master Plan calls for shifting the runway 550 feet to the east (not lengthening). This shift, while increasing safety for pilots, impacts the safety of bicyclist. Key to the project is the "vacationing" of Orchard Road, a key safe connector road for bicyclist. Without Orchard Road, bicyclist are relegated to Tucker Road and it high traffic, narrow shoulder, and often gravely conditions.

The Port of Hood River has agreed to partner with the County and stakeholders to seek out solutions for bike improvements.

Two possible solutions to this problem include:

  • Improving Tucker Road.
  • Creating a trail around the end of the runway.

On May 19th, the Hood River County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the airport plan. HRVRC will continue to follow upcoming progress on this project and will work with the Port and County to insure connectivity is addressed.
