Wind Power in the Gorge

[May 28th, 2010]

At least two wind projects that would immediately impact the Hood River Valley are in some phase of development. HRVRC has not taken any formal stance on these projects although we are following each project closely. They include:

Whistling Ridge Energy Project

On May 21, 2010 the Washington State Energy Facility Siting Council (EFSC) released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Whistling Ridge Energy Project. Proposed by Whistling Ridge Energy LLC, a subsidiary of SDS Lumber Company, this approximately 75-megawatt (MW) wind energy facility would be located about seven miles west of the City of White Salmon in Skamania County, Washington. Up to 50 wind turbines, each ranging in size from 1.2 to 2.5 megawatts (MW) and up to 426 feet tall, would be installed for the project.

Public meetings have been scheduled to receive comments on the Draft EIS on June 16 and June 17.

Written comments will be accepted through July 19, 2010.

More information about commenting on Whistling Ridge, including the DEIS and letter from WA EFSC is available by clicking here:

Fir Mountain

A pre-application was submitted to Hood River County in November 2009 for the development of four 2.5-megawatt turbines in the east hills of Hood River County.
