A decade after planning started, and five years after it stalled because of a lack of money, the Hood River Bridge-replacement project is again moving forward. Planners put out a request for qualifications, with submittals due Dec. 16, for an engineering study on the project.

Local support for the project remained strong even when the prospect of getting money for the project looked bleak, said Dale Robins, senior transportation planner with the Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council. That support lets planners move quickly when the project gets money.

“We’re moving forward on the engineering estimates so that when the dollars come through, we’re ready,” Robins said.

The project has received a $576,000 federal earmark, Robins said, only half the amount needed to prepare a final environmental impact statement. But it’s enough to pay for a big chunk of engineering work needed for that statement: a type, size and location study.
